About Us

Orthopaedic activities of Kanpur were started by our legendary father figure, Prof. A.K.Gupta, Emeritus Prof. Orthopaedics, GSVM Medical College, Kanpur in nineteen hundred sixties with comprehensive post-graduate training in Orthopaedics, which was ably continued by Emeritus Prof. Satyanand, Prof. S.N.Chaturvedi, and Prof. R.K.Shukla.

When UP chapter of the Indian Orthopaedic Association was formed in 1976-77 (known as UPOA), UP level conferences were held in Kanpur and IOACON was aso organised in 1984 in Kanpur by Prof. Satyanand.

When UP chapter grew in strength, the formation of the city clubs was encouraged in all major cities of UP. Efforts to form City Club in Kanpur were started when Prof. Rajendra Nath was elected as secretary of UP chapter IOA in 1995-96.

So KOA was formed in 1997 by the founding members and Prof. Jayant Bajpai was requested to lead as its first president.

The seed of KOA was sown in the late nineteen hundred eighties when some orthopedic surgeons like Dr. V. K. Agarwal, Dr. P. M. Gadre and Dr. Santosh Rajpal, Dr. Rajeev Agarwal, Dr. T. P. S. Lamba, and a few others started meeting and sharing their cases and experiences at the premises of Dr. V. K. Agarwal. When Dr. Rajendra Nath joined GSVM Medical College, Kanpur as an associate professor in Nov.1990, he too was invited to join the group.

The impetus to form KOA came when Dr. Rajendra Nath was elected as honorary general secretary of UP chapter of Indian Orthopaedic Association (now known as UPOA) in 1995-96, and it was his official responsibility to form orthopedic clubs and associations in large cities of UP. So, he established orthopedic clubs or associations in Faizabad, Shahje Kanpur, Nainital (part of UP), as Kumayum Orthopaedic Association, and others but he started from Kanpur itself and arranged the meetings of the founder members at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur to start Kanpur Orthopaedic Club in 1997 (which was later renamed as KOA due to technical reasons). Prof. Jayant Bajpai, being HOD, Orthopaedics at GSVM Medical College was invited to accept the leadership as the 1st President of Kanpur Orthopaedics Club, and Dr. T. P. S. Lamba was the 1st Secretary. Since then regular monthly morning meetings of KOC were organized at GSVM Medical College, shifting the venue from Dr. V. K. Agarwal’s house to Medical College.
